MJ
(Ronni)
My eyebrows need plucking , I thought as I gazed into the makeup mirror. I flipped it to the side that magnifies your image five times and started on my brows. Iâm a magician with tweezers.
Suddenly there was my dad, standing in the doorway. Didnât he have anywhere else to be?
âHi, VeronicaâI mean Ronni,â he said.
Does he always have to bother me when Iâm busy? âCanât you say hello?â he asked.
âHell-o,â I replied and continued tweezing.
He scanned my vanity and nightstands. Makeup and polish were crammed everywhere. âYou have enough to start your own store, mija.â He chuckled.
âOne day I might.â
He sighed. âThere are more important things than beauty.â
Thatâs what you think, I wanted to say.
I checked the time on my cell and wondered where Mary was. Sheâd agreed to the makeover, and later, when Iâd popped the question about tutoring so I could pass algebra and get the car, sheâd said sheâd be happy to help me.
The little genius better get here soon. My party was tomorrow, and I still had way too many things to do.
I was punching in her number on my cell when the doorbell rang. I opened the door and there she stood, as plain as a blank canvas.
âCâmon in,â I told her, anxious to begin my master-piece. I grabbed her hand and led her to my room. âSit here,â I told her, motioning to the swivel chair.
âOkay,â Mary said. âWhatâs first?â
âYour before picture.â I aimed my digital camera. âHold still.â
Click.
âWhatâs next?â
I studied her eyebrows, or should I say eye-bushes. âBrows, of course.â Pink tweezers in hand, I went to work.
âOuch!â Mary flinched as I plucked.
âDonât move,â I warned.
Iâd perfected one brow and was admiring my work when my dad yelled from the other room, âIâm going to Target, Veronica. Anything you need?â
âNo!â
âBe back soon!â
âYeah, yeah.â I started the other brow.
âYour nameâs Veronica?â
âYeah.â
âItâs a pretty name. Why did you change it?â
âBecause Ronni sounds cooler.â
âAnd you wanted to be cool.â
âI was always cool,â I informed her.
âAnd popular?â
I smiled. âI was never unpopular.â
âMaybe I should change my name,â Mary said.
âTo what?â I asked.
âSomething with a K . . . like Kiley, or Kara, orââ
âYou could always use your middle name.â
âJane?â she said.
âMary Jane?â I couldnât believe it. Who does that to a kid? Then it hit me. âYour initials, MJ,â I told her.
âMJ?â She grinned. âThat sounds good.â
Instantly, I felt proud, like I deserved a pat on the back for helping the plain Jane with the plain name. In fact, I felt so good I decided to ask her if she wanted to come to my party.
MJ looked surprised. âMe? Sure.â
âThen pay real close attention to what I do because Iâm going to give you some makeup so you can do it yourself at home, okay?â
âOkay,â she replied and sat up straight.
âLast year, my grandmother wanted me to have a Quinceañera, but there was no way I wanted to deal with all that church stuff,â I blabbed as I put on her foundation.
âWhatâs a Quinceañera?â MJ asked.
âA big party for Latina girls when they turn fifteen.
